NRR Project: “In Other Words (Fly Me to the Moon)”
Composed by Bart Howard
Performed by Kaye Ballard
Recorded 1954
2:14
You should read the excellent and comprehensive essay on this piece at the National Recording Registry! It covers the career of the great Kaye Ballard, the song itself, and the life of the song’s composer, Bart Gordon.
It’s an amazingly popular song. It’s been recorded more than 300 times. Felicia Sanders was the first to sing it, but Kaye Ballard was the first to record it. She was a great comic talent who was underecognized! Here it’s done in its original ¾ time, slowly and sweetly. Frank Sinatra made the song his own in 1964.
The National Recording Registry Project tracks one writer’s expedition through all the recordings in the National Recording Registry in chronological order. Next time: A Night at Birdland (Volumes 1 and 2).
